Passion For Smiles

Passion For Smiles

by Steve Gamel

There is so much Dr. James Dyer and his son, Dr. David Dyer, could brag about when it comes to their practice, Argyle Orthodontics. For starters, they have more than 55 years of combined experience treating a variety of routine and complex cases, and their comprehensive care includes everything from braces and Invisalign® options for children and adults, early interceptive treatment, and TMJ diagnosis to teeth whitening and advanced surgical care. So if you are in the market for an experienced orthodontist who can handle any need, you just found them.

But in a recent interview with Argyle Living magazine, this friendly father-son duo spent most of their time sharing fun stories about what really makes Argyle Orthodontics tick – stories of local families they’ve built relationships with, community, the passion they share for their work, individualized service, and the unique experience of working side-by-side every day.

“If I were asked to describe this practice, I’d say this is definitely a family with a passion for orthodontics. And I’m thrilled that David became a part of it,” Dr. James Dyer said while glancing at his son. “We were just talking a little while ago about one local family – they have five children, and we’ve seen them all over the years, including the mother. They keep coming back because they know they get the right care, and they feel like they are in a family place. He added, “People really enjoy being here, and some of the relationships we’ve built started 18 years ago when we first came here. That shows the confidence this community has in us. It’s that small-town orthodontist office.”

Argyle Orthodontics is the only true orthodontics office in Argyle and has been serving this community since 2000 when Dr. James Dyer – who has been in orthodontic care for more than 42 years – transitioned the practice from Grapevine. Dr. David Dyer joined up with his father in 2017 after serving in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps for 13 years. Both are residency-trained and board-certified, with David boasting a wealth of surgical experience while helping military members and their families in Okinawa, Japan and Norfolk, Va. Though he loved his time in the Navy, he was excited for the opportunity to move to Argyle and join his dad.

“The entire time I was growing up, I always knew my dad had a cool job that he really enjoyed,” Dr. David Dyer said. “He never had that, ‘Oh, I guess I have to go to work again today’ mentality. He was passionate about his work, and he was good at it. It also allowed him to have a good family life. I saw it more and more growing up, and even got to work in here with him from time to time as a teenager. I definitely try to follow in his footsteps.

He added, “My dad treated me when I was younger, and now I treat my son, Joshua. It’s fun, and even though my dad has tapered back over the years, working with him is great. I appreciate what he’s done and we love bouncing ideas off each other.” Dr. James Dyer agreed working as a family is a unique experience.

“When I began winding down my career a little bit, I had other doctors who wanted to buy this business. But I told David that it was his if he wanted it,” he said. “It wouldn’t have been as fulfilling to have sold this practice to someone else. We’ve let our passion for this business show, and as Argyle has grown over the years, this practice has grown with it.”

There are a number of quality orthodontics options for Denton County residents to choose from. But one thing the Dyers pride themselves on – and it’s something that feeds into their relationship way of doing business – is providing individualized care. Rather than working from a proverbial cookbook of how they should administer cookie-cutter services, they focus on proper diagnosis and crafting custom treatment plans. They accomplish that one-on-one service because of the time they are willing to spend with each patient.

“You won’t find another orthodontics office that provides this much individual attention,” Dr. James Dyer said. He and Dr. David Dyer also added that their outstanding staff is a key part of making each patient feel special and valued. “Together, with our amazing team, we provide every patient with the highest level of personal, customized care. It’s what makes us who we are.” And who are they? The small-town orthodontists everyone can’t wait to meet.

“The way we get to make changes in someone’s life – their appearance, confidence, self-esteem – it means a lot to us,” Dr. David Dyer said. “We love all our patients, and it’s neat to be a part of someone’s life like that.”
