Fun in the sun is great UNTIL it is NOT. Accidents, injuries, and bugs can attack at any moment. Putting together a first-aid kit that is practical and functional can be a daunting process. I hope that you find this list to be doable and functional. Put a kit together and keep it in your car for those impromptu minor summertime emergencies.

QUICK GUIDE TO A FIRST AID KIT:

1. Purchase a basic pre-made first aid kit to get you started. Try to get one with a container large enough to add things or get a small duffle bag.

2. Add to the kit (examples below):

  • Water bottle for cleaning out wounds and battling dehydration.
  • Electrolyte/rehydration solutions or packets
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Wet wipes
  • Clean towels —microfiber towels are absorbent and compact
  • Alcohol wipes —good for cleaning instruments for reuse.
  • ACE bandages, large popsicle sticks/tongue blades for splinting needs
  • Small scissors and Tweezers
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Topical and Oral Benadryl
  • Hydrocortisone Ointment
  • Calamine or Calamoseptine (my favorite) Ointment
  • EPI-PEN/ Prescription medications
  • Ibuprofen and Tylenol —liquid, tablets and chewable: Pack a dosing chart for children to quick reference.
  • Dramamine or other nausea medications
  • Afrin nasal spray for nosebleeds: Afrin is a quick fix for a nosebleed
